Stepping up the construction and
energy sectors’ focus on
decarbonisation post COP28

#ESSummit

About the

Energy & Sustainability Summit

The third edition of Big Project Middle East’s annual Energy & Sustainability Summit will build on the success of its predecessors, with a distinct focus on how the construction and energy sectors can significantly step-up decarbonisation efforts post COP28.

Although the built environment has made positive strides to move away from unsustainable practices and materials, there’s plenty that can and should be done by regional stakeholders across the supply chain. Following on from COP28, the summit will take stock on what has been achieved by the built environment to date, paint a picture on where it should be, and outline strategies and steps to get there. The summit will also address the growing challenge of greenwashing.

From an energy standpoint, the day-long summit will have a dedicated focus on renewable energy sources – apart from solar – that the MENA region can rollout to decarbonise, the potential of green hydrogen and infrastructure requirements, the rise of waste-to-energy facilities, and much more.

The 2024 edition of the Energy & Sustainability Summit will also encourage stakeholders in the construction and energy segments to actively look outside of themselves, and drive the sustainable transformation of the supply chain, in terms of how materials are sourced, and how end-of-life materials and assets are dealt with.

The summit will convene speakers from government, construction and energy firms, owners and operators, regulators, industry bodies, suppliers and technology companies.

2024

Agenda

The Energy & Sustainability Summit will present content in a variety of different formats, including high-level panel discussions, keynote speeches, fireside discussions, and expert presentations. The event’s content will focus on the following themes:

  • How can construction and energy stakeholders make a tangible difference post COP28
  • Raising awareness about greenwashing and moving beyond platitudes to action
  • Going beyond solar to decarbonise the MENA region’s energy sector
  • Sustainably sourcing and responsibly disposing of end-of-life assets and materials
  • Transitioning to sustainable, locally sourced materials

2023

Agenda

The one-day event will bring crucial issues in the built environment and the energy sector to light, so that strategies can be devised, and action can be taken in the near term to accelerate the effective decarbonisation of both sectors, and their respective supply chains.

Effective

Decarbonisation

The built environment still has a long road ahead to significantly reduce its impact on the environment and achieve Net Zero. The summit aims to focus on how the MENA region can step up its decarbonisation focus post COP28, aim to raise awareness about greenwashing, and why organisations should actually take action that makes a tangible difference.

Expanding

Clean Energy

Decarbonising the energy sector is key to achieving a Net Zero future, and the MENA region has significantly expanded its solar-based capacity in recent years. In alignment with clean energy ambitions and mandates, the region has to expand its clean energy capacity further and look at alternative sources, including green hydrogen, wind energy, hydroelectricity, and waste-to-energy. In addition, the region has to invest in energy storage to ensure that the need for fossil fuel driven energy facilities is drastically reduced.

Transforming

The Supply Chain

While companies have taken steps to decarbonise internal operations and the delivery and operation of assets, the time is now for major construction and energy players to drive decarbonisation of the entire supply chain. This means ensuring that materials are sustainably sourced, while waste materials and end-of-life assets are disposed of responsibly. Construction and energy players must also begin the process of investing in and embracing low carbon materials.
